why do you want to join our company

We frequently hear from candidates who describe the question “why do you want to join our company” as frustrating or seemingly pointless. One commenter on this post went so far as to call the question “why do you want to join our company?” the “dumbest question ever.”

“why do you want to join our company?” For a variety of reasons, questions like “why do you want to join our company?” “Why this company?” and “Why are you interested in this position?” are very important to hiring managers.

It’s also not about inflating their egos. Hiring managers may ask this question to determine how you would fit in with their company’s culture, or to understand your motivations for applying for the job and whether you are likely to stay in the role for a long time.

Why Do Interviewers Ask “why do you want to join our company?”

When asked about the company or the position, the interviewer is looking for similar things. The hiring manager wishes to do the following:

  • Learn about your career objectives and how this position fits into them.
  • Make certain that you are genuinely interested in the position and that you will be motivated to perform if hired.
  • Learn everything you can about the company, industry, and position (and if you took the time to research)
  • Recognize your priorities and preferences — what aspects of the company and/or job appeal to you and why?

How to Conduct Company Research

Aside from sharing more about your own career goals and motivations, your response to “why do you want to join our company?” must demonstrate that you are familiar with the company with which you are interviewing.

For everyone else, here are some research tips for any company. (If you’re looking for a more in-depth article, check out the Job-Guide Seeker’s to Company Research here.)

The Company Web Site

Begin with the company’s website. This may appear to be an obvious approach, but it requires time to implement.

A good company website includes information such as the company’s history, mission statement, product lines, and the most recent awards and accomplishments. Read the “About Us” page and spend some time in the Press Room, which usually has the most recent press releases and media mentions.

If the company has a blog, read it. Next, sign up for any available newsletters and investigate the company’s social media presence (LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, etc.)

You should also look into the “Careers” section. On their websites, some companies provide extensive information about the hiring process, including job descriptions and sample interview questions.

Media Coverage

Although company websites can provide valuable information, a broader Google search can provide even more.

In the mainstream press and industry publications, look for recent articles about the company. These articles can also provide helpful information about industry trends and how the company compares to competitors.

This sample response addresses the organization as well as the role. He praises the products, the employees, and the work environment (don’t companies love to say they’re innovative?
