A Herbst appliance, often called an LMA or face mask, is a type of upper airway splint used to treat sleep apnea. If you suffer from OSA and want to avoid the risks of surgery, Herbst appliances are your best bet — as long as you take all precautions necessary to prevent problems. Here’s everything you need to know about Herbst appliances and how they work!
What To Expect With A Herbst Device?
Getting fitted for a Herbst device will be similar to getting fitted for any other type of internal body armor. You’ll need to undergo some x-rays and possibly a CT scan, though it really depends on your doctor and what type of injury you’re looking to protect. Once you have your diagnosis, there are two main considerations: collarbone protection (for those with supraclavicular fractures) and clavicle support (for those without supraclavicular fractures). In general, both types of devices are very easy to adjust, especially if you don’t mind doing so in public.
Why Use The Herbst Appliance?
If you’re planning to undergo bariatric surgery, there are two main kinds of medical devices you’ll be given: gastic bypass surgery and an adjustable gastric band. It can be difficult to decide which option is right for you. An adjustable gastric band has several benefits, but it also comes with risks and challenges. Gastic bypass can help patients lose weight faster than other options, but it also requires a longer recovery period. If you choose to have gastric banding surgery, however, you may end up needing an additional device: The Herbst Appliance (aka The Adjustable Biliopancreatic Diversion [ABPD] Device). What is an ABPD? How does it work?
Do I Have To Clean The Herbst Appliance?
A fixed orthodontic appliance, like an Herbst device, doesn’t have to be cleaned as often. But, make sure you still take care of it! Bacteria builds up in appliances just like anywhere else. It will cause damage if left alone and can lead to additional issues down the road. Be sure to clean your Herbst regularly with soap and water. Allow it to dry completely before putting it back in your mouth. Does Getting A Herbst Appliance Hurt?
When people hear about stomach stapling, it sounds very dangerous and painful. The truth is that getting an herbst apparatus isn’t very painful and most patients find out that they don’t feel any pain at all. If you do feel any discomfort during or after your surgery, tell your doctor right away so they can give you something to help you relax. The fact of the matter is that anyone who gets their obesity treated with weight loss surgery will experience some level of discomfort; there’s no way around it.
