Refractive errors: what are they?

Your eye’s cornea and lens help in focus. Refractive errors are visual issues that arise when your eye’s shape prevents you from having good focus. The length of the eyeball (longer or shorter), alterations in the cornea’s shape, or age of the lens could all be the causes.

 

What kinds of refractive errors are there?

These errors often come in 4 different forms:

• Nearsightedness (myopia) blurs distant objects.

• Nearby objects appear hazy when you have farsightedness (hyperopia).

Astigmatism can cause local and distant objects to appear distorted or hazy.

• Adults in their middle years and older struggle to see things up close due to presbyopia.

What are the symptoms?

  • Noticing an aura or glare around bright lights

Eye strain, which occurs when your eyes become fatigued or irritated, headaches, difficulty focusing while reading or using a computer.
