How to Retrieve the Ring You Accidentally Dropped Down the Drain

by AnicaOaks

It may sound like a cliche, but a surprising number of people accidentally drop a valuable ring down the bathroom sink drain. Often, it’s an engagement ring or wedding ring, and sometimes it’s a commemorative ring for a particular life event or achievement. Here is how to retrieve the ring you accidentally dropped down the drain.

Turn Off the Water

Don’t let the faucet water keep running. Turn it off and remove the stopper from the drain. Locate the water valve behind the toilet and turn it to the off position. Do not run water in the sink while trying to retrieve your ring. The goal is to keep the jewelry in the water pipe closest to the surface of the sink or tub so that it can be removed as easily as possible.

Use a Lighted Flashlight and Magnet

If the ring is magnetized, look for it in the drain with the help of a lit flashlight. Attach the magnet to the rod at the end of the flashlight and insert it gently into the drain. Slide it in a slow, guided motion from side to side to try and catch the jewelry piece. Pull it out carefully to avoid bumping the rod and making it fall back into the drain.

Try a Plunger

Use a clean drain plunger to try and pump out or suck up the ring from the drain. This can work if the plunger is powerful enough to pull the jewelry out and if the ring is not extra heavy. It may take a few tries to establish a firm pumping motion with the plunger.

Insert a Drain Hook

There are several types of drain hooks or tools you can use to fish a ring from the pipe. A plastic stem with serrated edges may be adequate for catching the ring and bringing it out of the drain. Firmer tools made of stainless steel and other materials might be needed if the ring is stuck, but wiggle the tool gently to avoid scratching the jewelry.

Call a Plumber

If you can’t pull the ring out of the drain from the top basin, you can disconnect the p-trap and remove it that way. However, you need to know a little about the water pipes and how they fit together to disconnect the trap and put it back together when you get the ring. You may want to call a plumber for this task as it is messy and may require specific plumbing tools.

Here is how to retrieve the ring you accidentally dropped down the drain. If they don’t work for you, don’t despair. Try these tips or call an expert to help you recover it quickly and easily.
