Facial serums: One of those products which I believe everyone pretends is aware of what are…but actually don’t. However, today I’m going take it down. Do they work as a moisturizer? (Sort of). Are they oil? (Sometimes.) Do they contain ingredients that can transform my skin into sparkling Jennifer Lopez clone? (Honestly? YASSSS.)

Main takeaway: serums rock. They’re an essential component in my daily skincare routine…but they weren’t always this way. For me, serums were an “I-didn’t-know-I-needed-this-until-I-tried-it” type of thing. However, after my first serum I was addicted. They’re loaded with vitamins for your skin and provide huge value for money. They improve your skin more than any cleansing and moisturizing routine could be, since you can customize the design and address your skin’s specific concerns. So, let’s start using Serum 101:

What do you mean by a serum?
Serums are highly concentrated concoctions that have the intention of delivering potent ingredients directly to the skin. Serums enable you to concentrate on specific skin issues (wrinkles acne, discoloration and more.) and address it directly. Serums are able to penetrate deeply in the pores (because their molecular sizes are tiny) and offer a high amount of active ingredients, making them highly efficient. There’s nothing weak and weak about these products. They’re like a powerful specific recipe designed to tackle a skin problem, and help you solve the problem.

What is a moisturizing serum?
Yes and yes and. Serums are oil-based and/or full with moisturizing compounds…it is up to you the one you choose! The way they work is that they mayadd moisturizing properties, yet they are not a substitute for your moisturizer. Consider your serum in terms of the potent ingredient you’d like soak into your skin. an effective, rich moisturizer can create a barrier over the your skin’s surface to help keep that serum-y goodness.

What is the best time to apply an oil or serum?
Serums are best applied after cleansing and toning, but prior to moisturizing to be absorbed by the skin. They can then be absorbed by your moisturizer. Note: often the less is more. These serums are very potent and 5-10 drops of them will suffice!
